As I sit and wait out the current Covid-19 pandemic, I’ve allowed myself to think how we have in fact, dealt with this in a smaller and stranger scale. I guess it was the term “virus” that got me to thinking about similar situations and how we’ve dealt with them. No, not Bubonic Plague, Spanish Flu, or Disco. I’m thinking of computer viruses and issues related. Crazy? Me? Maybe a bit (maybe more than a bit), but hear me out…
Your computer becomes infected. It slows down, programs crash, the hard drive and operating system may start to glitch and will eventually die if the problem is not addressed. Most of us have been through this. What did we do?
Think about the analogy of us today as we sit and have time to reboot. When this is over (and it will be over because I will eventually run outta rum), you will have had the chance to reboot your working and private lives and values. In your own home, you have the privacy to swallow your pride and scream “heck (or insert exclamation of choice here), I’ve never liked doing this. Or, maybe it’s time to bury a hatchet or two and start fresh.” We have the resources in social media and email to reach out to friends and experts for advice and recommendations. We have the time to fail, get over your embarrassment, try again, and be proud when you begin to get it. You have a leaner, meaner you! I know for many, the “computer” will crash. Jobs will be lost. This is not meant to make light of those situations. For those people, we can reach out and offer condolences, empathy, and support. Despite the social distancing, this is not the time for emotional distancing. This is the time for emotional hugging. Now, back to your regularly scheduled program… -PETER
